We do not have a lot of choice in this life, wether we like it or not, we have to choose some alternatives sometimes only two. So it`s like a dilema for us. That`s what happens in the short story Bartleby, the Scrivener written by Herman Melville, an American writer in the 19 century. Melville tries to show us that a new development does not always give good impacts. In order to survive, we should be open to new ideas and keep abreast with developmenl, .for instance in technologv or industrialization. This kind of modernizalion leads us to a better living or a w0r.w one even to our death The story presents us two choices. The successful one is represented by the narrator staff who take the modernization and life style in Wall Street and the other one is represented by Bartleby who rejects and eventually brings him to his death. By giving the words Ah, humanity nt the end of ilte stor? Melville elicits our sympathy and emphaty.
